Everyone’s a critic

By Melissa

In this age of blogging and self-publishing, there’s no denying that everyone can be a critic. Some people charge in, others adopt a pseudonym and publish their ideas protected by some degree of anonymity, and others are reluctant to commit themselves to the timeless record that is publishing to the Internet. Call me old fashioned, but I still like to read the opinions of ’experts’ – those who know a lot more about the topic – even if to disagree with them. But who’s right and is anyone ‘righter’ than anyone else now?

The Wheeler Centre recently held an interesting session about formal criticism and the role of the critic, specifically arts critics, in this brave new world. Watch the panel discussion.
